‘Good Start’: US-Iran Conclude First Round of Nuclear Talks in Muscat

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said a new round of indirect nuclear talks between Iran and the United States in Muscat, Oman, marked a “good start,” following approximately six hours of negotiations mediated by Oman. Araghchi stated that both sides presented their positions in a positive atmosphere and agreed that consultations in Tehran and Washington would determine the timing and format of the next round of discussions. Omani Foreign Minister Sayyid Badr Al Busaidi facilitated the talks by relaying messages between the two delegations.

Araghchi said the negotiations are focused solely on nuclear-related issues and stressed that discussions must continue in a calm environment free from threats or tension. Iranian officials reiterated that the country’s key demands include the effective and verifiable removal of economic and financial sanctions and recognition of Iran’s right to enrich uranium domestically. The talks resumed after months of stalled engagement, with Iranian officials citing lingering distrust following regional conflicts as a major challenge to progress.

The Iranian delegation was led by Araghchi alongside senior diplomatic officials, while the US delegation was led by Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and included adviser Jared Kushner and US Central Command commander Adm. Brad Cooper. Oman described the discussions as serious and useful in clarifying both sides’ positions, with both parties agreeing to continue the negotiation process after further consultations in their respective capitals.
