One in Three Muslim Students in California Report Being Bullied by School Staff
Nearly one in three Muslim students in California say they were bullied by school staff through biased lessons, verbal harassment, or intimidation, according to new data. Almost sixty percent never reported what happened, signaling a much deeper problem than typical student conflict. The findings point to a systemic failure inside classrooms where educators are expected to provide safety but are sometimes contributing to the harm. The report shows staff bullying takes several forms. Twenty nine percent of students experienced offensive remarks or inappropriate behavior about Islam or Muslims. Sixty four percent faced verbal harassment, twenty two percent encountered biased teaching, and fourteen percent reported intimidation or exclusion. Advocates say schools need clear accountability and stronger training so every student can learn without fear. The report urges districts to provide continuous professional development on cultural competency, anti Islamophobia, bias awareness, and restorative approaches. It also encourages teachers to examine their own assumptions and to actively support Muslim students who may feel isolated or targeted.
