Palestinian-Owned Social Media App ‘UpScrolled’ Climbs to Top 10 on App Store
UpScrolled, a short form video social media application developed by Pales-tinian Australian software developer Issam Hijazi, recorded a sharp rise in user registrations over a 24 hour period, with more than 100,000 new accounts created, according to figures shared by the company. The app climbed rapidly in mobile app store rankings, reaching the top 10 in several countries, including number five in the United States, number six in Australia, and number eight in the United Kingdom. The platform is marketed as an alternative to established social media networks, promoting a simplified content feed and stating that it does not use algorithmic ranking systems that prioritise or suppress posts. UpScrolled’s public descriptions also say it does not engage in shadowbanning and positions itself as a platform where political content, including posts related to Pales-tine, can be shared without moderation practices users say are common on larger platforms. Hijazi has said he began developing the app following personal losses in Ga-za and amid concerns about how narratives around Pales-tine are handled online. In public statements, he has linked the project to broader debates about content moderation, censorship, and control of political discourse on global social media platforms, while UpScrolled continues to expand its user base following its recent surge in downloads.
