Rights Group Designates 16 Campuses as ‘Hostile’ for Targeting Muslim, Arab Anti-Gen*cide Protesters
A newly released report titled Designated: 2025 Hostile Campus Ratings Report evaluates 51 universities for alleged suppression and targeting of Muslim, Palestinian, Arab, and allied students who spoke out against genocide between October 2023 and December 2025. Researchers said the findings point to widespread failures by university administrations to uphold commitments to free speech and academic freedom during campus protests and political expression. Dr. Maryam Hasan, a research and advocacy specialist involved in the study, said the goal of the report is to push institutional reform and inform students and academics about campus environments. She stated that if reforms are not implemented, the report serves as guidance for those seeking institutions that protect open discourse and critical thought. Research director Corey Saylor said many reviewed institutions “self-selected to be instruments of repression” toward individuals expressing anti-genocide viewpoints. He added that the findings should act as a warning to prospective students and staff that some universities may accept tuition or employment while penalizing political expression.
