Starbucks Closes 400 Locations Amid Pro-Palestine Boycotts

Starbucks has closed about 400 locations as part of a shift in business strategy, according to reports cited by CNN. Most closures occurred in September and were concentrated in major cities with a high number of existing outlets. In New York City, 42 stores closed, representing about 12 percent of the company’s locations there, making Dunkin’ the largest coffee chain in the city.

The closures were accompanied by layoffs of more than 900 non-retail employees, which the company confirmed in September. Starbucks said the affected stores were underperforming or unable to meet brand standards. The company currently operates more than 18,000 locations across the United States and Canada.

Chief executive Brian Niccol said the restructuring moves away from a strategy of dense store saturation. Starbucks plans to open new locations in 2026, including in major metropolitan areas, and to remodel existing stores. The company has also updated in-store policies, including changes to restroom access rules.
