Three Charged for Harassing Praying Muslim Students in Florida
Three men, Christopher Svochak of Waco, Texas; Richard Penskoski of Canyon, Oklahoma; and Ricardo Yepez of Tampa, have been charged after allegedly hara-ssing Muslim students praying at the University of South Florida. According to police and video footage, they confronted the students during their dawn (Fajr) prayer on a parking garage roof, shouting slurs, offering bacon, and mocking their worship. Authorities have filed charges including a felony for “disturbing schools and religious assemblies” with a hate-crime enhancement, as well as misdemeanor counts for disorderly conduct and disrupting a lawful assembly. The University of South Florida has issued trespass warnings barring all three from campus. During the incident, one man carried a box marked “Kaaba 2.0 Jesus Is Lord,” while another wore a thobe bearing the words “Jesus Is God.” Video also shows the men asking if a student had a bomb, calling them terro-rists, telling them to “go back to Mecca,” and filming the episode.
