Trump Suggests Possibility of Military Strikes in Mexico Against Drug Cartels

US President Donald Trump suggested the possibility of military strikes in Mexico to target drug cartels, signaling a major escalation in U.S. anti-narcotics operations. Speaking in the Oval Office on Monday, Trump said he would be “OK” with such strikes, claiming the U.S. knows the addresses of cartel leaders and all their routes. He did not confirm whether actions would require Mexico’s consent but noted discussions with Mexican officials had taken place. The comments follow reports that the White House is preparing drone strikes targeting cartel labs as part of a broader intelligence-led campaign.

Trump also addressed Colombia, saying he would be “proud” to dismantle cocaine factories there. He defended prior U.S. operations in the Caribbean and Pacific, citing executive orders labeling six cartels as terrorist organizations, which bypass Congressional approval. Operations since September have kil-led over 80 people, including Colombian citizens, prompting criticism from Colombian President Gustavo Petro.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has stated that no U.S. military action will occur without her explicit authorization. Trump also declined to rule out deploying ground troops in Venezuela, emphasizing his administration’s broader focus on dismantling Latin American drug operations, including sanctioning Venezuelan officials linked to the Cartel de los Soles.
