Trump Threatens 25% Tariffs on European Allies Until Denmark Sells Greenland to US
President Donald Trump has threatened sweeping tariffs on several European allies unless the United States is allowed to purchase Greenland, escalating his long-running push to acquire the autonomous Danish territory. In a Truth Social post on Saturday, Trump said a 10% tariff would be imposed from 1 February on imports from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the UK, the Netherlands and Finland, rising to 25% on 1 June. Trump said the tariffs would remain in place until a deal is reached for the “complete and total purchase of Greenland,” citing what he described as US national security concerns in the Arctic. His comments followed recent Nato deployments to Greenland by European allies, which Trump referenced in his post. The threat has drawn criticism from European leaders and comes despite recent US trade agreements with both the UK and the EU. Polling shows broad opposition among Americans to acquiring Greenland, while analysts warn the move could further strain US-European trade relations.
