UK Mosque Set Ablaze with Worshippers Inside in Latest Anti-Muslim Crime
A mosque in Peacehaven, East Sussex, was severely damaged in a suspected arson attack late Saturday night, in what police are treating as a hate crime. Surveillance footage showed two masked individuals wearing balaclavas pouring an accelerant at the mosque’s entrance before setting it alight. The fire destroyed a vehicle parked nearby and caused significant damage to the front of the building. Sussex Police said no injuries were reported but confirmed that people were inside the mosque at the time. Authorities are treating the incident as “arson with intent to endanger life” and have appealed for public assistance in identifying the suspects. While investigators have not classified the attack as terrorism, the UK Green Party and several local officials have urged police to reconsider, citing its religious motivation and the presence of worshippers during the attack. They called for greater transparency about the motive and the classification of such incidents. Community leaders and MPs have strongly condemned the attack, describing it as a “heinous act of hatred.” Police have stepped up patrols around mosques and other places of worship across Sussex to reassure residents and prevent further violence. The Peacehaven arson follows a series of Islamophobic incidents across the UK and Europe. In Glasgow, several mosques were recently targeted in coordinated attacks involving smashed glass and property damage. Rights advocates say the pattern of violence reflects a disturbing rise in anti-Muslim sentiment across the continent. Muslim community organizations have called for stronger government measures to protect places of worship and for clearer legal recognition of religiously motivated crimes as acts of terrorism when warranted.
