‘Unity in Hijab’: Annual World Hijab Day Observed Globally in Solidarity with Muslim Women
World Hijab Day was observed internationally on February 1 under the theme #UnityInHijab, with events and statements focusing on solidarity with Muslim women and addressing discrimination and Islamophobia. Held annually since 2013, the initiative encourages people of all backgrounds to engage with the experiences of Muslim women who wear the hijab and highlights the hijab as a symbol of identity, dignity, and personal choice. The 2026 observance emphasized how increased visibility can subject Muslim women to greater scrutiny and harassment, and called for collective action to address prejudice in public spaces, workplaces, and educational institutions. The #UnityInHijab campaign promoted participation from women of diverse backgrounds and stressed that Islamophobia intersects with other forms of inequality, with organizers highlighting the need to listen to Muslim women and support stronger protections and policy recognition. Activities marking the day took place globally, including statements in Nigeria where First Lady Oluremi Tinubu praised Muslim women for their faith and called for peaceful coexistence and respect for diversity. Media reports noted that World Hijab Day is observed in more than 140 countries through in-person and virtual events such as conferences, workshops, and public awareness campaigns, alongside continued attention to the hijab’s representation in arts, television, and film.
