Chicago Area Police Thwart Planned Attack on Shia Muslim Mosque

Authorities in Illinois successfully thwarted a planned attack on a Shia Muslim mosque in Glendale Heights, a suburb of Chicago, during the sacred month of Muharram in July 2025. The incident, though details remain limited, has raised serious concerns about rising threats against Muslim religious institutions, particularly Shia communities. The Council of Shia Muslim Scholars of North America condemned the attempted terror attack, which was disrupted through the timely intervention of law enforcement. The targeted mosque was hosting Muharram commemorations, a period when Muslims, and often non-Muslims, gather to honour the legacy of Imam Hussain (peace be upon him) and his stand against oppression. In a formal statement, Secretary-General Sayyid Muhammad Rizvi expressed gratitude for the swift action of law enforcement and called for increased protection for Muslim places of worship across the United States. He warned of a growing wave of anti-Muslim rhetoric and hate crimes, attributing the rise in such incidents to polarizing political discourse, biased media coverage, and the dehumanization of Muslim communities. “The negative language, false depiction, and biased coverage of many media organizations and the Islamophobic rhetoric of certain prominent politicians have contributed significantly to the rise of such dangerous incidents,” the Council stated. The Council emphasized the need for religious, political, and civil leaders to promote respectful dialogue and social harmony, and for Muslim communities to remain vigilant. It called on Islamic organizations to work closely with local governments, law enforcement, and fellow citizens to safeguard places of worship and foster mutual understanding. Quoting the Holy Quran, the Council reminded the public: “Had not Allah repulsed the people from one another, ruin would have befallen the monasteries, churches, synagogues and mosques in which Allah’s Name is much invoked…” (Qur’an 22:40).
