Republican Candidate for Michigan Governor Stokes Anti-Muslim Hate Ahead of Dearborn Rally
Anthony Hudson, a Republican gubernatorial hopeful from Grand Blanc Township, is spreading false claims about Dearborn ahead of a march he has labeled the American Crusade. He announced a “peaceful assembly” for Tuesday at 4 p.m. at Schaefer Road and Michigan Avenue, urging supporters to join him and accusing the Detroit suburb of “Muslim infiltration” and “Sharia law,” which has never existed in the city. Hudson also asserted that the National Guard, Marines, and a “Patriot Militia” would attend, though no agency has confirmed this. Hudson plans for the group to pray and sing gospel music before heading to a 7 p.m. Dearborn City Council meeting. He has made a series of unverified claims online, including that 5,000 people will march with him, though only about 20 have indicated they will attend. His posts include attacks on Muslims, replies encouraging bigotry, and repeated vows to “expose” Dearborn, despite census data showing a diverse population including Christians, Muslims, and non-religious residents. The march comes shortly after federal authorities arrested three Dearborn men accused of discussing an ISIS-inspired attack, a case still contested in court. Hudson has used the arrests to escalate unfounded warnings of “infiltration,” resurfacing older anti-Muslim protests and sharing conspiracy-laden videos. His rhetoric has drawn alarm from civil rights advocates and placed new attention on his broader political platform, which includes proposals to eliminate Michigan’s income and property taxes—cuts that state data show would remove tens of billions of dollars that fund schools, local governments, police, health care, and infrastructure.
