Over 200 Australian Muslim Org’s Sign Joint Statement Condemning Police Brutality Against Worshippers During Peaceful Protest
More than 200 Muslim organizations across Australia issued a joint statement condemning the actions of New South Wales Police after officers disrupted a peaceful prayer during a lawful protest on 9 February. The demonstration took place in Sydney outside Sydney Town Hall during a rally opposing the visit of Isaac Herzog. Video footage circulating from the scene shows officers intervening while roughly a dozen men were praying, with police seen grabbing, dragging, and forcing some to the ground despite no apparent threat to public safety. The organizations described the incident as an abuse of authority, a serious lapse in judgment, and a violation of religious freedom during what they stressed was a nonviolent gathering. The coalition is demanding a public apology from state leadership and police authorities, the resignation of the police commissioner, and an independent investigation empowered to review operational decisions and use of force. They also called for individual accountability for any officers involved, including criminal charges if evidence supports prosecution.
