46% of French Muslims Would Consider Leaving if Marine Le Pen Wins Election: Poll

Nearly half of Muslims in France would consider emigrating if far-right National Rally leader Marine Le Pen becomes president, according to a poll by the French Institute of Public Opinion (IFOP) for French magazine Marianne. The survey, conducted from 25 to 30 September among 9,689 respondents, found that 46% of Muslim participants would consider settling in another country if Le Pen wins the 2027 presidential election.

The poll found that 81% of Muslim respondents believe a Le Pen presidency would lead to increased aggression and discrimination against Muslims. Approximately one-quarter said they might feel compelled to conceal their religious identity from authorities, reflecting concerns about the potential consequences of her proposed policies.

Le Pen has pledged to combat what she calls “Islamist ideologies,” including proposing a ban on Muslim headscarves in public places. In a statement on X last month, she said she would put legislation containing such measures to a national referendum if elected. Her proposals have intensified concerns among Muslim communities and rights advocates over religious freedom and discrimination.

Le Pen, who has led the National Rally, formerly known as the National Front, has been a prominent figure in France’s far-right politics for years. She is seeking the presidency for the fourth time. She was convicted in a separate case involving the misuse of European Parliament funds and received a five-year ban from holding public office, reduced to two years on appeal, alongside other penalties. The conviction could affect her ability to contest the 2027 election.

The findings come as France approaches the end of President Emmanuel Macron’s second term, with the presidential election expected in April 2027. Macron’s presidency has been marked by repeated protests, controversial government policies and criticism of police conduct during demonstrations. The poll highlights fears among some French Muslims about the direction of national politics and the potential impact of a far-right victory on their future in the country.
