Illinois Man Charged with Terrorism After Threat Against Michigan Mosque

Police in Dearborn Heights say an Illinois man has been arrested after a threat was made toward a mosque near Ford Road and Kinloch Street. The message was reported on September 29, just a day after a deadly church shooting in Grand Blanc. Officers documented the complaint and handed the case to detectives right away.

Investigators traced the threat to Elgin, Illinois, identifying 63-year-old Kenneth Gehrke with help from local police there. A visit to his home provided key details that confirmed his involvement, and the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office later approved a warrant for his arrest. Dearborn Heights officers took him into custody on November 10.

Gehrke now faces charges including making a false report or threat of terrorism, a hate crime offense, and aggravated stalking. Police said the quick partnership between departments in Michigan and Illinois reflects their effort to protect the community and respond decisively to any threat of violence.
