Pope Leo Says Palestinian State Only Solution to Conflict with Israel, Calls for Peace in Lebanon

Pope Leo XIV reaffirmed that a Pales-tinian state remains the only solution to the Israeli Pales-tinian war, noting that Israel does not currently accept that outcome but emphasizing the Vatican sees no alternative. His comments came both during an airborne press conference while traveling from Turkey to Lebanon and again during his address to Lebanese leaders. He urged prayer as a source of strength when surrounded by the sound of weapons and called on officials to serve their people while encouraging citizens to remain committed to reconciliation despite hardship.

His visit to Lebanon drew large crowds who braved heavy rain to welcome him. Clergy and citizens described his arrival as a sign of hope during a period marked by intensified Israeli strikes along the southern border and fears of renewed war. Religious leaders said the pontiff’s presence showed Lebanon is not forgotten, while residents waiting along Beirut’s roads spoke of renewed joy and comfort. Communities in the south said they have endured nearly two and a half years of war but have never lost hope, viewing the visit as confirmation that their suffering has meaning and that a message of real peace is possible.

The trip unfolded against continued ceasefire violations and rising tensions. Hezb-ollah urged the pope to condemn Israel’s war in the south, accusing Israel of repeated strikes and of maintaining troops in several Lebanese areas. The group rejected US pressure to disarm and warned that Lebanon still faces the risk of wider escalation, pointing to the killing of a senior commander as an example of ongoing violations. Israeli strikes were reported even during the papal visit, underscoring the fragile situation as the pope attempted to act as a mediating voice seeking a just solution for all sides.
