Over 3,500 NYC Legal Workers Call on Mamdani to Drop Pro-Israel Police Commissioner Tisch

ALAA-UAW Local 2325, a union representing more than 3,500 New York City legal services workers, issued a public statement urging Mayor-elect Mamdani not to retain Jessica Tisch as police commissioner. The union cited Tisch’s record as NYPD commissioner, stating that during her tenure there has been an increase in police stops involving Black and Brown New Yorkers and an expansion of policing at political demonstrations, including pro-Pales-tinian protests. The union said its members encounter the effects of these policies regularly in courts and communities across the city.

The statement described the role of policing in labor and protest contexts, alleging that the NYPD has surveilled picket lines, arrested striking workers, and intervened in protests, while focusing enforcement on low-income neighborhoods for offenses such as fare evasion and retail theft. It also noted that the NYPD continues to receive a significant share of the city budget while other public services face funding constraints. The union linked these practices to broader patterns of enforcement priorities within the department.

The union further highlighted Tisch’s background as an heiress to the Tisch family fortune and pointed to the family’s involvement with the NYC Police Foundation, which supports NYPD programs, technology, and international engagements. It referenced NYPD policies and training initiatives implemented under Tisch’s leadership, including surveillance systems, protest policing tactics, and decisions related to internal accountability, such as the handling of disciplinary cases reviewed by the Civilian Complaint Review Board. The union concluded by calling on Mayor-elect Mamdani to reverse his pledge to appoint Tisch, stating that his campaign commitments on police reform could not be implemented if she remains in the role.
