Deaths by Extreme Cold in Gaza Rises to 24, Including 21 Children
Deaths caused by extreme cold in Ga-za have reached 24 since the start of Israel’s genocide in Ga-za in October 2023, including 21 children. According to a statement released Tuesday by the government media office, seven children have died since the beginning of the current winter season due to severe cold, bringing the total number of cold-related deaths to 24 as of January 13, 2026. All those who died were displaced Pales-tinians living in forced displacement camps. The media office reported that approximately 7,000 tents have been destroyed or swept away by an ongoing low-pressure weather system affecting the enclave. It warned of severe humanitarian consequences as freezing temperatures return, noting that Israel’s military war crimes and blockade have destroyed homes and infrastructure and displaced more than 1.5 million Pales-tinians into camps lacking basic shelter and services. The statement cited a near-total lack of heating supplies, inadequate shelter, and shortages of blankets and winter clothing, alongside continued restrictions on humanitarian aid. It said the situation poses a serious threat to children and other vulnerable groups and held Israel responsible for the deaths. The office called on the international community, the United Nations, and humanitarian organisations to enable safe shelters, allow unrestricted entry of relief supplies, and prevent further loss of life.
